Gongju is a city located in the heart of the eastern part of Chungcheongnam-do
Province.
Sejong Special Self-Governing City and Daejeon are located to its east, Cheongyang and
Yesan to its west, Buyeo and nonsan to its south, and Asan and Cheongan to its north.
Covering 864.29㎢ in area and thus accounting for 10.5% of the total area (8,213.36㎢) of Chungcheongnam-do Province, Gongju is the biggest region among the 15 cities and counties in the province. It makes up around 0.95% of the total area (99,407.9㎢) of South Korea, and the arable lands (rice paddies and fields) span around 185.82㎢, which is about 19.76% of the total area of the city. The ratio of arable land to total area is slightly lower than that of Korea, and the ratio of rice paddies to fields is 66:34, which is higher than that of the national average (61:39). On the other hand, ratio of forests to total area is around 5% higher than the national average.
