The Religious Service for the Mountain God of Gyeryongsan Mountain is a traditional festival held to carry on the folk religion of honoring mountain spirits. The festival was launched by Sim Woo-sung, the Director of the Gongju Folk Drama Museum, in 1998, and it has been held annually around March 16 in the lunar calendar. These days, it is hosted by the Preservation Society for the Religious Service for the Mountain God of Gyeryongsan Mountain. The festival consists Confucian, Buddhist and Shamanic ritual ceremonies as it aims to emerge as a “harmonious festival of Confucianism, Buddhism and Shamanism.” The celebratory performances consist of folk games and intangible cultural heritage performances, and various other programs are conducted during the festival period.

The Fresh Verdure Festival has been held at Magoksa, a Buddhist temple with a thousand-year-long history, since 2004. Various events will be held to bring attention to the greenery of the thousand-year-old temple surrounded by high mountains and deep valleys of Taehwasan Mountain. Magoksa Temple, where lush vegetation and rape flowers in full bloom can be seen in the springtime, contains a large number of cultural properties including Daeungbojeon Hall, designated as Treasure No. 801. The pine forest bathing site created along one of the ridges of Taehwasan Mountain presents a fantastic view of a dense pine and valley. It is famous for its diverse trails (1-hour, 2-hour and 3-hour routes) that are characterized by gentle slopes, making it a relatively easy hike for people of all ages.

The Baekje Cultural Festival is a festival of culture and history held in Buyeo and Gongju, which served as the capital of Baekje, considered a cultural powerhouse in ancient East Asia. It was initially launched as Baekje Daeje in 1955 under the vision of the community leaders in Buyeo, and Gongju City began participating in 1966 after its name was changed to Baekje Cultural Festival in 1965. The Geumgang Nature Art Biennale is an international nature art exhibition supervised by the Korean Nature Artists’ Association, Yatoo, which has been primarily active in Gongju since its inception in 1981.
The first biennale was held in 2004, based on the experience of planning and hosting an international nature art exhibition since the early 1990s, and the event is sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Chungcheongnam-do Province, and Gongju City.
Artists come from all over the world to create works of art while living together for about a month. There are presentations to introduce the participating artists and nature art projects taking place around the world, and an international nature art seminar is also held during the festival period. Participatory programs are offered for children and adults, while the artworks produced by the participating artists are on display at Yeonmisan Nature Art Park and Geumgang Ssangsin Park, where they undergo changes over time.

In Gongju, a city of history and culture, a special art festival is held to present diverse artworks by Korean and foreign artists. There is also a wide variety of participatory programs where the participants can heal their minds and souls and escape the weariness of their daily lives. Artists from at least ten different countries in five continents are invited every year as a way to present contemporary artworks that reflect the unique cultures and artistic styles of the participating artists’ home countries.
